It was juicy and delicious, but the chicken was so wet that the breading became soft and largely fell apart. My Meal: After much deliberation, I ordered The Hertha Winch, a sandwich with a breaded chicken cutlet, sliced pepperoni, melted mozzarella cheese, and Cajun mayonnaise on Italian bread. Other than American dishes like French fries, the menu had diverse options ranging from Cuban sandwiches to Middle Eastern gyros and Italian pizza. Customers simply order at the register with a member of the friendly staff and while they wait, they hold onto a device – maybe something like the vibrating table trackers at Panera. The animated logo coupled with the bright green and purple color scheme help create a balanced, modernized-retro style. Inside, there’s subway tile, wooden crates, and metal barrels for decoration. What I ordered: The Hertha Winch with a side of pasta salad ($8.25), Grape Leaves ($4), Italian cheesecake ($4.50), and XXX Vitamin Water ($1).*įirst Impression: From the outside, Undercover Eggplant looks charming and inviting, with the restaurant’s name engraved in a rustic font. In my opinion, there's not a better place in town to spend my money on food.Where I Went: Undercover Eggplant on 421 Chestnut St., Oneonta, NY. What IS special about the Undercover Eggplant is the food and THAT is what I'm paying for. There's nothing extra special about the building or the decor. The decor, which some folks have mentioned, it's painted in eggplant colors outside (You CAN'T miss it: eggplant purple walls with bright green trim) looks like any normal deli inside. It's always good stuff though, nothing offensive. Sometimes it's blues or jazz, sometimes it's pop. Delightfully satisfying! (Honorable mention: Any of the cheesecakes!) One suggestion: If you're in a hurry and you're ordering more than just soup, call ahead so your food is ready when you get there. YUMMY! Favorite dessert: Bread pudding! Made with the bread they make at the deli, whipped cream on top. Note: The soup comes with a couple slices of the fabulous bread they make. If you're not sure what you might like, they're always willing to give you a little sample. I've only disliked two of the probably 20+ soups that I've tried. ![]() Almost any of the soups, which change daily. You HAVE to try the Creamy Garlic Eggplant pizza! (I wasn't a big eggplant fan, until I had this pizza!) It's got batter dipped eggplant atop a creamy garlic sauce and cheese, then dalloped with a little tomato pizza sauce, also made on the premises. My favorites? The Louisianna Locksmith sandwich: Thin slices of hot, batter dipped eggplant, cold thinly sliced ham, provolone cheese and all the fixings (lettuce, onion, tomato, etc.) on some of the best bread, which is baked fresh right there at the deli. The portions are huge, the prices are good, especially considering what you're getting. This deli has the BEST sandwiches, pizza, soup, salads and desserts! First and foremost, everything is quality food, very well prepared. WHY had I never heard of this place before? not a dining experience, rather, good food to go. the biggest dining loss in Oneonta history. THEN IT HAPPENED: the restaurant burned down. The restaurant is in a part of town that I do not frequent, but I intended to go out of my way to get there. My meal was very inexpensive, DELICIOUS, and I was definitely going to return OFTEN. I went reluctantly, and once again, was absolutely delighted. ![]() She has vegetarian tastes (which means SAWDUST is a food group). Why bother? A friend assured me that I would enjoy the Undercover Eggplant. That said, I don't venture out to explore new establishments that often. Oneonta notoriously has the worst food this side of the Mississippi. I know restaurants and am not a picky eater. ![]() I have been to restaurants all over NYC, SF, LA, Paris, Amsterdamn, on and on. Well, I have good news and I have bad news.
